Learning Focus: Weighing Objects

1. Make your own balance scale to weigh objects.  You will need a hanger, plastic cups (like applesauce containers) and yarn for hanging.  You’ll also need something for your weight.  On the website they used dried beans.  You could also use coins (pennies) or jelly beans.  Find something that you have quite a few of so you can weigh objects of different weights and be able to count them. Please see the following blog for more details:

https://kidsactivitiesblog.com/17228/science-for-kids-hanger-balance/

2. Take a picture of your balance and post on Seesaw.

3. Feel free to play around with this. We will use it in tomorrow’s activity.

Learning Focus: Communicating ideas through writing

1. Think of the story we’ve been exploring this week.  What if The Three Billy Goats Gruff ended in a different way?  How would that go?

2. In your journal, write about a different ending to this story.  Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end each sentence with proper punctuation.

3. Illustrate your ending.

4. Share with me on Seesaw!

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Weighing Objects

1. Watch this video about measuring weight:

2. Using the balance scale that you made yesterday, weigh 5 different objects.  You’ll need to choose items that will fit in your cups nicely.  You will know you are at the correct weight when your balance scale is balanced.

3. Share your findings with me on Seesaw.  Be sure to tell me what kind of units you’re using (dried beans, pennies, etc.).

For example: 1 eraser = 12 dried beans
