Literacy

Learning Focus: Reading accurately and understanding what you read.

1. Read the lyrics to the song Five Green and Speckled Frogs.

2. Watch the video and sing along!

3. Craft time! Make your own frogs and a log. You need to make five frogs and one log. You can do this using any materials, but you need to be able to move the frogs. Do not glue them to your log. Be creative! You will use your craft for math today.

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Problem solving using addition and subtraction.

1. Use the frogs and logs you made to read and “act out” the math word problems. You will need a piece of paper to write down your math equations.

2. Challenge: Can you make up your own math problem? Try using larger numbers. Take a video or picture on Seesaw to show me how you solved your problem.

Learning Focus: Describing words (adjectives)

1. Choose one of these directed drawing videos: Cartoon Frog or a Tree Frog. Follow the directions and draw the frog you chose.

2. Words that describe a person, place, or thing are called adjectives. These describing words make our writing more interesting. Write a list of words to describe the frog you drew. How many adjectives can you come up with?

3. Choose some of your adjectives to write an interesting sentence about your frog. Take a picture of your sentence and frog drawing to share with Mrs. Unrau on Seesaw.

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Addition up to 12

You will need to get the 2 dice and the “whiteboard” from the package Mrs. Unrau sent home. You will also need a whiteboard marker and something to erase, like a Kleenex. If you don’t have the “whiteboard” you can draw it on a piece of paper.

1. Draw 2 lily pads.

2. Find 12 objects that you can use as counters. You could use: cheerios, dried noodles, legos, coins, rocks, buttons, or any other small object you can find 12 of.

3. Put your 12 objects beside the lily pads, but not on them.

4. Roll your two dice, add the dice together to find out your first number and move that many objects onto the first lily pad.

5. Put the rest of your objects on the second lily pad. Write down the addition equation you have just made.

Number from 1st lily pad    +     Number from 2nd lily pad      = ­     ___?___

Then, try again! How many different ways can you add to make 12?

Wednesday, April 1st

Literacy

Learning Focus: Communicate new learning.

1. Read through the Frog Life Cycle Slides. These were sent to you by email (due to copyright rules I cannot share them on the website). Parents may need to help with reading, as there are some tricky words.

2. Write down what you learned about frogs.

3. Send a video of you reading what you wrote to Mrs. Unrau on Seesaw. If you are unable to send a video, you could send a picture of your writing or type it and send it on Seesaw or email.

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Subtraction practice

You will need to get the dice and the dinosaur subtraction game from the package Mrs. Unrau sent home. You will also need a small object for each player to use as a game piece and objects to cover up the circles in the middle of the board.

1. Follow the directions written on the Dinosaur game board to play and practice your subtraction.

  • If you are having a hard time with subtraction, you could use your fingers or your numberline from your package as a tool to help you.

Learning Focus: Rhyming words

1. Listen to the story Frog on a Log.

  • Pay attention to the words that rhyme and words that don’t. Go back and listen again if you need to.
  • Remember, rhyming words sound the same and often have the same ending but start with a different letter. For example: cat and mat, frog and log

2. Create your own rhyming book! You can use plain paper, use pages in your journal, or print out my template if you have a printer.

  • You will make a 3 page book to practice rhyming.
  • Each page will say:

“______________ sit on _________________”

just like in the story. See if you can come up with your own rhymes that weren’t in the story.

3. When you are done with your writing, illustrate your book. You could also make a cover page if you want!

4. Read your new book to your family. Share a picture or video on Seesaw to show me your favourite page!

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Writing numbers to 100.

1. Can you write all the numbers to 100? Draw a grid (10x 10) or if you have a printer, print a blank 100 chart, then fill in the numbers to 100.

  • Try to write the numbers from memory, but if you are having a hard time, you could look at this 100 chart to make sure you get them all correct.

Keep the 100 chart you made to use in future math activities.

Literacy

Learning Focus: Reading accurately and writing phonetically.

1. Read the poem, I Have a Little Frog.

2. Imagine that you have a pet frog, just like in the poem. Write about your pet frog in your journal.

Some things to write about:

  • What would your frog’s name be?
  • Describe your frog. What does he or she look like.
  • What does your frog eat?
  • What would you and your frog do together?
  • Where would your frog sleep?

When you are writing, remember to:

  • Write sentences with a capital at the beginning and punctuation at the end.
  • Use finger spaces between your words.
  • Spell the words how you hear them – sound them out.

3. Draw a picture of you and your frog that matches what you wrote.

4. Send Mrs. Unrau a picture of your amazing writing on Seesaw!

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Skip counting.

1. Use the 100 chart that you made yesterday to help you practice your skip counting.

2. Practice skip counting by 5 and by 10 up to 100. Skip count by 2 up to 20.

  • Talk about the different patterns. How do you know what number comes next? Can you skip count without looking at the 100 chart?

3. Body Break Challenge: How many times can you hop like a frog? Can you hop and count to 100?
