April 6th - 10th

Monday, April 6th

Today is the two year anniversary of the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash. If you have a hockey or sports jersey at home, please wear it today in honour of the Humboldt Broncos. We remember them today. Put a hockey stick on your front step if you have one.

Literacy

Learning Focus: Sounding words out in reading and writing.

1. Read the poem, Easter Surprise (sent to you via email).

  • To sound out this poem, you will need to remember some phonics rules:
    • Vowel Teams – When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and says its own name. Watch the song to refresh your memory.
    • Double Letters – When there are two of the same consonant together in a word, they make one sound together. For example: ball, apple, egg. Here is a video about Geraldine the Giraffe learning this rule.

Remember, phonics rules do not always work, but they give us something to try when we are stuck on a tricky word.

2. Use your five senses to write your own Easter Poem. You can print the Easter Is… template, or write your poem on paper.

  • Remember, I am not looking for all the words to be spelled perfectly. It is important that you use the letters that you hear to sound out the words.

Learning Focus: Naming 2D Shapes

1. Go listen to Mrs. Unrau’s story on the 2D Shapes on Seesaw. You will find it in your Activities tab. Then complete the activity by choosing one of these ways:

  • draw on the template on Seesaw
  • print this 2D Scavenger Hunt Page - fill it out and send a picture on Seesaw
  • or draw it on a piece of paper and send me a picture on Seesaw

Tuesday, April 7th

Today is Green Shirt Day in honour of Logan Boulet, a Humboldt Bronco from Lethbridge, who donated his organs so others could live.

Literacy

Learning Focus: Sounding out words in your writing and writing multiple sentences on a topic.

1. Listen to the story: Pete the Cat: Big Easter Adventure

2. Choose one of these sentence starters and write in your journal. Try to write at least 3 sentences about your chosen topic. Write more if you can!

If I was the Easter Bunny’s helper…

or

The animal that would be the best helper for the Easter Bunny would be…

Use this writing checklist to make sure you've done your best grade one writing!

3. Illustrate your journal with a picture that matches your writing.

4. Send me a picture of your writing on Seesaw.

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Sorting 2D shapes by their attributes

1. Watch this video to learn more about the 2D shapes. This is a longer video (16 minutes), but has lots of information about the different shapes.

2. On Seesaw, complete the Sort the 2D Shapes activity.

Wednesday, April 8th

Literacy

Learning Focus: Sounding words out to spell.

1. Cut out the letter cards from the Resources envelope I sent home. You will use these again after today, so make sure to save them!

2. Use your letter cards and follow along with Mrs. Unrau’s Building Words video lesson on Seesaw in your activities tab.

3. If the weather is nice, go outside for a walk. See how many signs of spring you can see using this Spring BINGO chart. You can print it out or make a list of what you find on paper.

If the weather is not cooperating or you don't find many signs of spring, you may want to revisit this activity again in a couple of weeks.

Numeracy

Learning Focus: Drawing and sorting 2D shapes.

1. Print or draw this Easter Egg.

2. Fill each line of the Easter Egg with 2D shapes. But don’t choose just any shape. For each line, choose a sorting rule and draw only 2D shapes that match that rule in that section.

I started an example for you here. I labelled my sorting rules so you can see what I mean. You do not need to label your sorting rules, but you should be able to explain to your family what they are.

Thursday, April 9th

Happy Birthday Eason!

Look on Seesaw for a special video and assignment for Eason's birthday!

Literacy

Learning Focus: Making Connections from Text to Self.

1. Listen to The Night Before Easter

2. Think about how this story connects to your own life. Does it remind you of anything? Tell someone in your family what the story made you think of.

3. For a fun activity, make yourself this Easter Bunny Folding Surprise.

4. There is a very special Seesaw activity today. Please complete it for Eason’s birthday!

Learning Focus: Tangram Puzzles

A tangram is a puzzle made up of seven shapes that can be arranged to form many different designs. A tangram has seven pieces: five triangles, one square, and one parallelogram. With only these shapes, you can make an almost infinite number of different images. When you make your tangram puzzle, you use all the shapes to complete the image and the shapes cannot overlap.

1. Play with some tangram shapes to build new shapes and pictures.

Choose one of these ways to complete this activity:

  • Go online to one of these tangram games.

Starfall Tangram Puzzles

-Click the purple First Grade Mathematics and Reading button

- Choose Grades 1,2,3

- Click the Geometry picture with 3 shapes and a ruler on the bottom left
